Industrial fume scrubbers

Beckox is a UK manufacturer of industrial fume scrubbers, designing, fabricating and installing complete systems — vessel, packing, recirculation sump, eliminator stage, fan and stack — in corrosion-proof polypropylene and PVC. These are process-industry scrubbers for plating shops, chemical works and factories, not laboratory cabinet units.

How a packed tower scrubber works

Contaminated air is drawn into the base of the tower and rises through a bed of high-surface-area packing media. Scrubbing liquor — often water, or water dosed with a neutralising reagent — is distributed over the top of the bed and flows down against the airstream. The counter-current contact transfers acid gases and soluble vapours from the air into the liquor, which collects in a recirculation sump at the base of the vessel.

Above the packed bed, an eliminator stage strips entrained droplets from the cleaned airstream before it leaves through the discharge stack. Sump liquor is recirculated by pump, with blowdown and fresh-water or reagent make-up holding the chemistry where absorption stays efficient.

Why thermoplastic construction

A scrubber spends its whole life wetted by the very chemistry it is removing. Polypropylene and PVC vessels shrug off the acids and alkalis that would attack coated steel, weigh far less, and can be fabricated into one-off geometries — offset inlets, integral sumps, tapered transitions — without tooling. Welded seams keep the vessel homogeneous: there is no lining to breach and no coating to maintain.

What Beckox provides

  • Vertical packed-tower scrubbers with integral or separate recirculation sumps
  • Horizontal and crossflow scrubber arrangements where headroom is limited
  • Packing support plates, liquor distributors and eliminator stages
  • Interconnecting ductwork, fans, discharge stacks and supporting steelwork
  • Installation and mechanical commissioning on site, including crane lifts
  • Repairs, re-packs and modifications to existing scrubber plant, whoever built it

Every vessel is fabricated in our own Poole works and trial-assembled before delivery, so what arrives on site fits first time.

Odour control for wastewater and sludge handling

Not every scrubber is on a factory. Pumping stations, sludge handling and effluent plant generate hydrogen sulphide and the associated odour complaints, and packaged thermoplastic scrubbers are a common answer — chemically dosed to neutralise H₂S, sized for the airflow of an enclosed wet well or tank, and built in materials that cope with a permanently damp, corrosive duty. We fabricate these to the same pattern as our process scrubbers; see also water treatment fabrications.

Servicing and re-packing existing scrubbers

A scrubber is not fit-and-forget: packing fouls, distributors block and eliminators degrade. We service, re-pack and refurbish thermoplastic scrubbers whoever built them — see scrubber servicing, repacking and refurbishment. If you want to understand the equipment first, our guide explains how fume scrubbers work.
