Plastic Fabrication in Southampton and the South Coast

Beckox fabricates industrial thermoplastic process equipment for Southampton, Hampshire and the wider South Coast from its own works in Poole, a straightforward run along the M27 corridor. Established in 1982, the company designs, fabricates and installs tanks, fume scrubbers, ducting, wet benches and pipework in polypropylene and PVC — process plant, not display or signage acrylic.

Industrial fabrication is a different trade from display work

A process engineer searching for plastic fabrication in Southampton or Portsmouth will mostly turn up firms that cut, bend and bond acrylic for shop displays, signage, point-of-sale stands and vacuum-formed covers. That is a skilled trade in its own right. It is not the trade that produces a bunded chemical storage tank, an extraction duct run carrying acid fume, or a plating line that has to hold temperature and chemistry for years.

Industrial thermoplastic fabrication works chiefly in polypropylene and PVC. Sheet is joined by hot gas and extrusion welding rather than solvent cement, and the design work sits around chemical compatibility, thermal expansion, stiffening and support, hydrostatic loading and containment. Beckox has worked in that one trade since 1982 — 44 years of industrial plastic fabrication, all of it from a single Poole works.

Southampton and Hampshire

The Hampshire corridor carries a dense concentration of the industries that depend on welded thermoplastic: marine and defence engineering, precision electronics and connector manufacture, medical and optical production, university and commercial laboratories, food and drink processing, and water and effluent treatment.

What those sectors share is wet process. Acids, alkalis, solvents, plating chemistry, deionised water, condensate and effluent all attack the materials a general engineering shop reaches for first. Stainless steel pits under chloride and hydrochloric attack; mild steel and paint simply do not last in a fume-laden bay. Polypropylene and PVC are specified because, as a general guide, they resist many of the acids, alkalis and salts commonly handled in wet process — compatibility should always be checked against the actual chemistry and temperature, and because a welded plastic vessel can be repaired in place rather than scrapped. Our industries overview sets out where each material tends to be specified.

Portsmouth and the Solent

Around Portsmouth and the eastern Solent the character shifts towards marine engineering, ship and boat repair supply chains, surface finishing and coatings, and the machine shops that feed them. Surface treatment is the common thread: degreasing, etching, anodising, passivation and plating all need tanks that tolerate hot chemistry, and all of them generate fume that has to be captured at the tank lip and taken away safely.

That is standard work for us — process tanks and vats with welded stiffening and integral bunds, lip extraction, ducting, and a wet fume scrubber sized to the extract volume and the chemistry being drawn off.

Salisbury and Wiltshire

Inland Wiltshire has a different profile again: research and defence establishments, agricultural and food processing, water treatment sites, and a spread of specialist manufacturers around Salisbury, Amesbury and Warminster. Laboratory and pilot-plant work features heavily here, which usually means fume cupboards, wet benches, small process sinks and short runs of chemical-resistant ducting rather than large vessels.

Distance from Poole is modest by road, and the same design-fabricate-install approach applies whether the item is a single bench or a full extraction system.

Dorset and the South West

West of Poole the run continues through Dorchester, Yeovil, Taunton, Exeter and up towards Bristol. Aerospace and precision engineering, dairy and food production, water utilities and pharmaceutical manufacture all sit within that arc, and all of them use the same catalogue of fabricated plastic equipment.

Why a Poole works suits the whole South Coast

Being a single-site fabricator on the coast has practical consequences rather than marketing ones. Site consultations are free, and someone who actually welds the work comes out to look at the space, the services and the access. Measure-ups are taken on site rather than assumed from a drawing, which matters when a tank has to pass through an existing doorway or a duct has to thread past existing steelwork.

Transport of large fabricated items can be arranged as part of the job. Vessels that cannot be moved whole are built in sections and welded out on site. Our Poole fabrication page covers the works itself in more detail.

What regional customers typically have fabricated

The equipment we fabricate falls into a fairly consistent set of items:

  • Process tanks, vats and bunded chemical storage tanks in PP or PVC
  • Wet fume scrubbers and the ducting, dampers and fan connections that serve them
  • Plating lines, electroless nickel plant and associated heating and agitation fittings
  • Fume cupboards, wet benches, enclosures and process sinks for laboratory and production use
  • Hoppers, chutes, weirs, launders and small bespoke items to drawing
  • Chemical-resistant pipework, plus repairs and relining of existing plastic vessels

Repair work is worth flagging separately. A cracked or leaking plastic tank can often be welded back into service on site, which can avoid the cost and downtime of scrapping and replacing a vessel.

Installation from a South Coast base

Design, fabrication and installation are handled by the same company, so there is no gap between the shop that built the item and the team that fits it. That matters most on installation days, when a duct route turns out to be tighter than the survey suggested or a tank needs a modification before it can be connected.

Work is not limited to the South Coast — call to discuss a location further afield. The client list built up over 44 years includes Rolls-Royce, Babcock Marine, Martin-Baker Aircraft, Merck, CooperVision, Wessex Water, Ryvita and a number of electronics and connector manufacturers — a record of who has been supplied, not a claim about any particular site or project.

For work anywhere between Exeter and Chichester, or further afield, call 01202 736 725 to arrange a free site visit, or send drawings and a description of the process through the contact page and we will come back with a considered proposal.
